Division 321 Ocean Sensing and Systems Applications Division

The Ocean Sensing and Systems Applications Division, Ocean Battlespace Sensing Department, conducts an extensive program of scientific inquiry and technology development in maritime sensing, ocean engineering and marine systems, and undersea signal processing.

The division's interests directly relate to Navy and Marine Corps operations including undersea, expeditionary, and special warfare in littoral environments. In addition, the division manages the operation and maintenance of Navy Research Facilities, research ships and other platforms.

Ocean Acoustics is now a National Naval Responsibility in science and technology. The National Academy of Sciences and ONR sponsored an article on Sounding Out the Ocean's Secrets as part of the Beyond Discovery Series. Visit Discovery of Sound in the Sea for an interactive website (aimed at K-12 students and teachers, and the interested public) that will introduce you to the science and uses of sound in the sea.
